Our Story


William Krekel, current owner Suzie Wichmann's grandfather, started the Krekel brand in 1949 on Eldorado Street in Decatur, Illinois.

His mission was to provide delicious Krekel Burgers paired with handmade milkshakes and French fries at family friendly prices - a combination unmatched elsewhere. Today, seven Krekel's locations throughout Central Illinois stand as a testament to Bill's legacy.

We are proud to be a part of that tradition!

The Springfield Krekel's location opened in 1993, and Suzie still strives to provide Bill's dream! Krekel Burgers are made to order with fresh, never frozen ground beef, seared thin and served on a toasted bun. Krekel Burgers are amazingly thin - almost crunchy - with just enough grease to add flavor and remind you that they're prepared the old-fashioned way: on a sizzling hot grill and never under a heat lamp. The fries are hot and crispy, and the many flavors of ice cream come in milkshakes, sundaes, concretes, specialty desserts or simple cones or cups.
